WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – After a fantastic 2010-2011 campaign, Williams College sophomore Felix Sun has earned the honor of being named an All-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association) ITA for his singles play.
Sun had a strong fall season as he captured the singles title at the USTA/ITA New England Championship in a tournament hosted by the Ephs. By virtue of the New England title, the Potomac, MD native advanced to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championship held in Mobile, AL. Sun would advance to the tournament's title match where he would fall to top-seeded Dillon Pottish of Emory University.
Speaking to Sun's fall season, head coach Dan Greenberg, who won the 2007 New England ITA Championship, noted, "Felix had a great fall, winning our ITA regional and getting to the national finals."
Sun would continue to his solid play in the spring season where he played in the first singles spot for the Ephs. Sun was a key component of an Eph team that advanced to the NCAA semifinals where they would fall to the eventual National Champion, Amherst College.
After the team portion of the season came to an end, Sun participated in the NCAA singles tournament. Unfortunately, Sun suffered an ankle injury in his round of 32 match against Adam Cranford of Washington College of Maryland and was unable to finish the match at full strength.
Although the spring season did not conclude as Sun would have liked, the 2010-2011 season was certainly a success. Greenberg praised Sun, commenting, "Felix came up with some great wins in singles and doubles. If you look at some of our crucial matches, Felix often found a way to win against the best in the country. It makes a big difference when your top player is a threat." Greenberg went on to say, "Even after spraining his ankle in the individuals at NCAAs, he continued to compete at a high level. I think that's exactly what you want from an All-American."
Sun finished the 2010-2011 season with a record of 20-8 in singles and 16-9 in doubles. After two years of collegiate tennis Sun has a combined singles record of 34-14.
This success gives coach Dan Greenberg and the rest of the Williams College men's tennis team much to be excited about at they look forward to the 2011-2012 season.
