ATLANTA, GA— It was another tough afternoon for the Williams College men’s tennis team (0-3) as they fell to the 3rd ranked Emory Eagles (7-4) by a score of 6-3 on Tuesday. The loss marks the third straight for the Ephs after being defeated by both Georgetown and North Carolina Wesleyan on a tough road trip down the east coast.
The Eagles came out and won all three doubles matches to start the afternoon, and the Ephs never recovered.
“Everyone’s frustrated right now, especially with the doubles,” head coach Dan Greenberg said after the match. “They set the tone for the whole day. It’s not just a 3-0 hole you have to climb out of. It’s tough to come out and play singles after getting swept."
The Ephs did manage to take three of the singles matches, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit. Felix Sun ’13 and Will Petrie ’12 claimed impressive straight set victories, while Bryan Chow ’13 came back from a set down to pull out another win for the Ephs.
“Bryan Chow showed a lot of resilience pulling out that three-setter,” noted Greenberg. “Will Petrie and Felix Sun also had good matches—not just because they won, but because they were very focused and played tough tennis. That was good to see.”
The team will travel to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 3rd to take on the Swarthmore College Garnet. In preparation for that match, Greenberg and the Ephs will focus intently on their doubles play. “We have a lot of work to do on our doubles if we want to compete with the top teams,” he said.
The match against Swarthmore will be the last stop on the Ephs’ road trip before returning to Williamstown. The team will play its home opener against Vassar College on Saturday, April 10th.
