David Nash '67 to play for USA in Von Cramm Cup in Turkey
Former Eph tennis standout David Nash '67 continues to be a
competitive force on the courts these days and will once again
represent the USA in an international competition. Nash has been
named to the 2008 USA Von Cramm Cup team that will compete in
Belek, Turkey, October 12-18.
The USA is the defending Von Cramm Cup champion having won the
2007 title in Wilding Park, New Zealand.
Nash has played in some 20 countries representing the USA after
being inspired by his former Williams coach Clarence Chaffee's
success in senior tennis circles. "When 'Chafe' [Chaffee] finished
coaching he went on to senior tennis and he was so successful it
inspired me to stay in the game," noted Nash.
"Chafe was such a great Williams coach, a great person and then a
great senior player that it got me to thinking about what I could
do on a national level and things just progressed from there," said
Nash.
Since 1992 Nash has played on 10 USA Cup teams and the USA has won
four titles -- Sydney, Santiago, South Africa and Turkey.
The teams in the Von Cramm Cup are limited to four members and the
players are chosen based on their results over the past 12 months.
A team match at the Von Cramm Cup consists of two singles matches
and a doubles match and a Cup competition usually consists of four
flights of seeded competition. "There are a lot of good players
around the world," said Nash. "You get some very competitive
matches against players who really know how to play the game."
Nash, a member of the Minnesota Tennis Hall of Fame, has won 17
National US Championships since 1982 and is currently ranked fifth
in singles and fourth in doubles in the M60 division.
