WILLIAMSTOWN,
MA - The
Williams College men's swimming and diving team emerged victorious
against the Union College Dutchmen 186.5 to 109.5, which completed
a positive day for the Ephs, since the women swam to a 197 to 90
win.
The team
started strong, going one-two in the 200-yard medley
relay. Though the Ephmen ventured outside of their
comfort zones today, experimenting with types of events, they
managed to win eleven events, including three impressive sweeps in
the 50-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, and 200-yard IM.
“We talked a lot this week about getting our hands to the wall first, and our men pulled through with some very close races,” remarked head coach Steve Kuster. Greg McElroy (1: 01.85) outreached Union’s Alex Boyd (1:01.99) in an exciting 100-yard breaststroke, and later in the meet Gary Roberson (2:16.55) powered from behind to defeat Boyd again (2:17.12).
This victory came on the tail of a hard week of work, including a
two-hour swim and heavy lift earlier in the day. Coach
Kuster used this meet as an opportunity to test his belief that
“the better you do tired, the better you will do in tight
racing later.”
On Saturday January 23, 2010, the Ephs challenge Springfield away
at 1pm.
“Springfield has been a challenge for us in the past, but
today, the men have shown they have the resilience and strength to
excel,” said Kuster. The Springfield
College Pride are 8-2, while the Williams Ephs are on a four-meet
win streak.
