Ephs remain in contention for Top 10 finish at nationals

MINNEAPOLIS, MN. — A strong sixth-place finish by the 800 free relay Friday has left the Williams College men's swimming and diving team in contention for a top 10 finish after the third day of the 2010 NCAA Div. III Swimming & Diving Championships.

A young foursome -- first-years Paul Dyrkacz, Tom Vieth and Tom Treesh swam the first three legs and junior Gary Roberson the anchor leg — pulled out a time of 6:46.01 for that sixth-place finish.

"Tom Vieth has an absolutely great leg, and Gary Roberson finished the race off very strongly," Ephs head coach Steve Kuster said. "It's always nice to see those type of performances on a national stage, we didn't have a lot going on today on the men's side but what we did went nicely."

In other news on the day for the men, Stuart Hogan swam to an 18th-place finish nationally in the 200 fly with a time of 1:53.22, while Chris Corbett was 31st in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.67.

"That was a personal best time for Chris, and Stuart was four-hundreths of a second away from competing in his first national final ever," Kuster said. "Two very good performances."

Williams remained in 9th place at the conclusion of the day's events, 15 points ahead of 10th place Washington University and 31 ahead of 11th place St. Thomas.
