WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College Ephs earned 1937.5 total points to win the 2010 NESCAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship, their 9th NESCAC title. Their closest competitor was Tufts with 1452.5 points, followed by Amherst (1352), Middlebury (1029.5), and Hamilton (757).
"There were teams today that had stronger individual performers, that won more individual victories," said head coach Steve Kuster, "but the key to our success was solid contributions across the board." In fact, one of the best performances of the day came from Ephs Ben Wampler, Ben Righi, Phil Treesh, and Pual Dyrkacz, who placed third in the 400 freestyle relay, but managed to break a school record with a time of 3:02.87."This year we had a very good, strong fresman class and just an overall deep group of talent. That really pulled us through."
The Ephs earned two individual victories of their own today, Wampler taking the 100 free (44.89 NATA) and Dyrkacz winning the 200 breaststroke (2:05.83 NATB). Stuart Horgan came just short of victory versus Middlebury's John Dillon in the 200 yard butterfly, earning a NATB time of 1:52.97 (to Dillon's 1:50.21).
Now that NESCAC competition is over, the focus of the team has shifted to the NCAA's.
"21st place was not exactly where we wanted to be last year. We're going to push hard and hope for a stronger finish this year," says coach. "All things aside, I think this was a great way to go out at home for our seniors."
