Ephmen extend lead at NESCACs

MIDDLEBURY, VT-  The Williams College men’s swimming and diving team extended their lead on Day 2 of the NESCAC championships as they attempt to win their sixth consecutive league title.  The Ephs added five event conference championships and hold a 189.5 point advantage over Tufts heading into the final day of the championships.

“Today featured a pretty solid morning session and a good evening session,” said head coach Steve Kuster.  “We are in a more comfortable position after today’s events but hopefully the guys are still hungry for even more success tomorrow.”

A big strength on Day 2 was the relay events, as the Ephs grabbed both titles.  In the 200 yard medley relay, senior Alex Wentworth-Ping, juniors Tyler Bonewell and Norman Scott, and first year Ben Wampler swam the fastest time (1:32.38).  In the 800 yard medley relay, seniors Chris Millen and Michael Kirwan, junior David Lebowitz, and first year Gary Roberson finished first (6:49.16).

The top relay participants for the Ephs also had success in the individual events.  Senior Chris Millen grabbed the title in the 400 yard IM (4:04.83), while fellow senior Ben Bullitt took 3rd (4:08.28).  Bonewell followed up his successful Day 1 with another league title, this time in the 100 yard breaststroke (57.57).  Senior Henry Felker finished second (58.15).

Roberson continued his successful rookie campaign with an individual league title in the 1000 yard freestyle (9.26.94).  Scott also contributed to the Eph point total with a second place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (49.61).

The Ephs now look to maintain their lead and capture the conference championship in tomorrow’s final day.
