LANCASTER, PA -- Williams
made the long trek to Lancaster, PA on Saturday to face off against
a young Franklin and Marshall squad. It was tight across the line,
but the Ephs managed to take the match 5-4 with solid performances
from the bottom of the line-up and from senior captain Christian
Henze at number 3.
F&M’s top two, the De Melo brothers, relied on good holds
and impressive shot-making to earn two points against Ephmen Ethan
Buchsbuam and William Morris. Will Gruner and Jack Ervasti both
came out of the gates slowly and lost in three games.
However, Jeremy Herrman was able to tough it out and take his
opponent in straight sets. Trailing 1-3, the second round Eph
players had their work cut out for them. Thankfully Nick Marks and
Bernard Yaros were able to answer the call and tie the match at
three apiece. Gabriel De Melo's win at number one gave the
Diplomats the 4-3 advantage, leaving the match into the able hands
of Julian Drobetsky and Christian Henze.
Drobetsky dropped the first but came back strong to take the second
11-6. Then Chris Gagnier won the third 11-5, which really put the
pressure on Drobetsky. “When Jack [Ervast] told me after the
third [game] that the match was up to me, I knew I really had to
buckle down.” said Drobetsky. He then battled to an 11-7 win
in the fourth game and rolled to a 11-2 victory in the
5th.
Meanwhile Henze won the first two against Sadiq Madraswala. But
Madraswala wasn’t going down without a fight, battling back
to take the third 11-9. Henze then went on a tear in the beginning
of the 4th playing really smart and aggressive squash,
going up 9-2. Then Madraswala managed to get 5 straight points but
Henze kept up the pressure and got two points and sealed the match
for the Ephs. The Ephs are happy with the result and respect the
effort and intensity that the Diplomats put into the match.
