Eph's Second in the NESCAC

The men’s side rolled over Hamilton in the first round of the NESCAC tournament this weekend. Bates came to play against the Ephs in the semi-finals of the tournament on Saturday, improving their result against the Ephs to 7-2 from their 8-1 loss at Williams earlier in the season. #1 Ethan Buchsbaum had a gutsy win over NESCAC rival Kush Mahan. Ethan’s won the match in five in an impressive display of hustle and sound depth. Number two Morris lost in four against Bates’ Will Katz. At number four, Will Gruner played remarkably frantic and unproductive squash, dropping the second game before managing to limp across the finish line in the fourth. Bucky Marshall lost at number nine to Deacon Chapin.

In the Final against Trinity one match was far and away the stand out. George Miller played Trinity’s #3 First-Team All-American Manek Mathur from India. It was senior Mathur’s last home match. George lost the first game 9-7 in a hard fought battle. He came off the court refusing coaching “I know what I have to do…” Not only did he go on to take the Williams’ first game of all ten matches, he took it decisively 9-2.

Manek then came back flying, hitting with incredible pace, proving too much for Miller. It looked as if the 2nd game had been a fluke. In the fourth game Miller raised his game to the next level, really pushing the over-confident Mathur. Mathur had match ball at 8-7, but Miller maintained the pressure and won the next two to equalize at 8-8. Mathur chose set one (giving Miller game-ball) and hit a tin giving George the game 9-8. Then in the final game, Miller pushed Manek to the limit, but Mathur’s cagey experience prevailed when he took two strokes to finish the last two points and take the match.

Even though Miller eventually lost, his performance demonstrated how Williams players can play with the very best. Everyone else played well and are excited to beat Brown for the team’s final home match on Wednesday.
