Dartmouth Squashes Ephs' Potter Division Aspirations

Wednesday’s match against Dartmouth was the make or break
match of the season, determining whether the Ephs could, against
the odds, break into the top eight to play in the Potter division
at nationals. The same went for Dartmouth, so needless to say, it
was a hotly contested match.
On first round was #9 Bucky Marshall #6 Bernard Yaros and #3
George Miller. Marshall came out strong in the first taking it 9-7.
He then lost the second 9-7 before succumbing to Lee’s fast
pace and dropping the third and fourth. Yaros, the consummate
veteran, came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, sweeping
the first 9-1. Shrubb then answered, taking the second 9-2. The
third game was a battle. Yaros had a game ball before Shrubb
stormed back to take the game 10-8. The surge in the third
exhausted Shrubb so Yaros took the fourth relatively easily 9-5.
Yaros was less patient in the beginning of the 5th letting Shrubb
take an early lead that Yaros never recovered from.
The hero of the day was George Miller. Miller beat Ted Newhouse in
four games. Despite the rambunctious pro-“ted
(frat)house” crowd, Miller played extremely tough squash.
After losing the first Miller took the second 10-8 and never looked
back rolling in the third and fourth games. Miller’s win caps
off an undefeated 6 and 0 college career against Dartmouth.
Cameron Henry played tough in his match against Dartmouth, pushing
Tyler Young to five. Henry took the second and fourth before
dropping the 5th to Young’s consistent grinding. Will Gruner,
inspired by Bernard’s first game, came out flying to take his
first 9-1. Lewis wasn’t about to roll over and went up 8-3 in
the second game before Gruner stormed back to win 10-8. Gruner then
just played consistent squash and wore Lewis down, capitalizing on
his first match ball.
Overall the Williams squad was disappointed with the result, but
couldn’t have asked much more from themselves. The Ephs have
adjusted their sights from the Potter Division to the Hoehn Trophy
and Western Ontario. “Its just tough to maintain our ranking
when the teams we competed with last year (Rochester, Cornell,
Dartmouth) brought in such good recruits” said captain George
Miller. “All we can do now is just play the best squash we
can and hope for the best,” added co-captain Bucky
Marshall.
