Alex Smigelski First Eph to be Named NESCAC Men's Ice Hockey Player of the Year

2010 All-NESCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Team

HADLEY, MA — Senior Williams two-year captain Alex Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, NJ) is the first Eph to be named the NESCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Player of the Year.

Smigelski, a forward, was also honored as an All-NESCAC First Team selection. “Alex had an outstanding Williams hockey career,” said Eph head coach Bill Kangas. “He was our leading scorer in both goals and points and is a finalist for the Joe Concannon Award.”

The Joe Concannon Award is presented annually by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston to the best American-born college hockey player in Divisions II and III in New England.

“Alex has earned each one of these achievements through his unrivaled work ethic,” continued Kangas. ”You can imagine the impact this type of effort had on his teammates,” continued Kangas. “They were forced to stretch the limits of their mental and physical abilities just to keep up with Alex on a daily basis.  His presence alone raised the stakes for everyone around him.  He truly was the ultimate teammate, leader, and role model at this level.”

Smigelski netted a NESCAC-best 17 goals and contributed 11 assists for 28 points for the 15-6-3 Ephs, who posted a 13-5-1 record in NESCAC, finishing third.

He netted the game-winner in the Ephs win over Norwich, which snapped a 20-game unbeaten streak by the Cadets, and represents Norwich’s only loss of the season

In 87 career games Smigelski tallied 41 goals and registered 33 assists for 74 points.
