Ephs defeat Salve Regina 6-0, close out 2009 undefeated

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass - The Williams College men's hockey closed out the pre-holiday break portion of their season with an unblemished mark after defeating Salve Regina 6-0 Sunday.

The Ephs close out 2009 with a 6-0-1 (4-0 Conference) record as well as the top spot in the NESCAC and a 14th place ranking in the Division 3 NCAA standings. Salve Regina ends the 2009 portion of their season with their ninth consecutive loss and fall to 1-9-0.

The Ephs poured 55 shots onto Salve Regina goalkeeper Bobby Baylis (49 saves) while limiting the Seahawk offense to just 18 shots, en route to a notching two scores each period and earning the 6-0 victory.

Andrew Lepore connected with Ryan Young and Patrick Morrissey to draw first blood for Williams just 1:36 into the game. Mike Brofft would add an unassisted score midway through the opening period to give the Ephs the 2-0 lead during the first intermission.

Ephs opened up the second period with their third score. This time after a quick series of one-touch passes between Evan Dugdale and Ben Contini culminated in a Alex Smigelski slap shot that beat Baylis stick side just 47 seconds into the middle period.

Smigelski would add an another score just under three minutes later when, following several quick give and go passes with Justin Troiani, Smigelski found himself with the puck at point blank range and promptly knocked it home to give Williams the 4-0 lead after two periods of play.

Matt Masucci and Cody Skinner would each add an insurance score in the final period to round out the Ephs attack and finalize the scoreboard at 6-0.

In the six games that count towards their overall record thus far this season, the Ephs have tallied a whopping 29 goals -- at a rate of 4.8 a game -- while only surrendering just nine scores -- at a rate of 1.5 a game.

The Ephs will return to action following the holiday break on January 8th, 2010 when they play host to NESCAC rival Amherst. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
