WATERVILLE, Maine - The Williams College men's hockey team jumped out to a four goal lead before cruising to a 4-2 victory over conference foe Colby Friday. The Ephs have now lost just once over their last seven contests and improve their record to 7-3-2 (3-0-1 NESCAC), while the Mules drop their second straight and fall to 4-7-1.
While the two teams perfectly mirrored each other in shots (Williams: 27, Colby: 27), penalties (Williams: 3, Colby: 3), power plays (Williams: 2, Colby: 2), and penalty minutes (Williams: 6, Colby: 6) the Ephs distanced themselves with quick offensives bursts to start periods.
After Ryan Scott's score in the first period gave the Ephs the 1-0 advantage after one third of play, Octavian Jordan would score just eight seconds into the second period to push the lead to 2-0. Alex Smigelski would add a pair of goals within the first 5:50 of the third period to balloon the score to 4-0 with under just over 14 minutes to play in the game.
However, the Mules refused to go quietly and would churn out sixteen shots in the final period after producing only four shots in the entirety of the second. Two of those shots ultimately found the back of the net, but Eph goaltender Marc Pulde's fourteen saves in the period ensured the Ephs would come out with the win.
"We played some great periods of hockey tonight." remarked Eph coach Bill Kangas, "But we still have another game to finish before we can close out this weekend."
The Ephs have the day off tomorrow, but will stay in Maine for another conference matchup Sunday. The Ephs will faceoff against Bowdoin in the inaugural game for the Polar Bears new ice rink. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM.
