Golf became an intercollegiate sport at Williams in 1903 and
from 1937 until July of 2007 the Ephs had a total of three head
coaches in 71 years.
Dick Baxter coached the Ephs from 1937-63; Rudy Goff from 1964-83
and Rick Pohle coached from 1984-2007.
Baxter posted a record of 191-60-2 (.762), winning 13 Little Three
titles and four New England titles at a time when intercollegiate
play was not divided into divisions. Under Baxter's tutelage the
Ephs captured an impressive three straight New England titles from
1956-58.
Goff mirrored Baxter's 13 Little Three titles, won four All-New
England championships and five New England Division III titles. In
20 years Goff compiled a record of 212-87 (.709). Four Ephs earned
All-America honors under Goff, including his son Bruce in 1980.
When Rick Pohle took over for Goff the landscape of New England
golf changed once again with the inauguration of the NESCAC
Tournament, and later team participation in the Division III
Championships was permitted in 1994.
Pohle has logged an impressive career record of 1,815-512-6
(.780), winning 15 Little Three championships (including the last
12 in a row), 10 NESCAC titles and 10 trips to the NCAA Division
III Championships. The 10 NESCAC titles is a conference best as is
the 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. Pohle also recorded an
additional NESCAC and Williams best when he guided his 1999 Ephs to
a 10th place finish at the NCAA Divisions III Championships.
Pohle has guided the Ephs to six of the last eight NESCAC titles.
Six Ephs have earned All-America laurels under Pohle. Since 1971
the Ephs have had 10 players earn All-America recognition.
The last appearance by the Ephs in the NCAA Championships came in
2008 under Pohle.
Rick Pohle's 26 years coaching the Ephs is second only to Dick
Baxter for the longest coaching stint in men's golf at Williams.
Two years during Baxter's reign from 1937-63 the Ephs did not field
a team due to World War II.
TACONIC GOLF CLUB... The Ephs are most fortunate
to call Taconic Golf
Club, one of the nation's top 100 courses, their home
course. Taconic is a 10-minute walk from anywhere on campus.
Taconic features outstanding beauty and superb playing
conditions.
Over the years Taconic has hosted numerous national, state,
regional and the 1999 NCAA Division III Championships.
The New York Times noted some of the recent changes to the layout at The Taconic Golf Club in an article by Bill Pennington on August 31, 2009.
PRACTICE FEATURES... Your game will have the
opportunity to improve with the two large putting greens, a
practice bunker and wedge area at the club. In addition, a special
practice area at Cole Field and a shagging area on the 18th hole
can be used. In Lasell Gym three practice rooms with nets and a
complete weight training and Nautilus center can be found to
maintain the "edge" during the off-season.
SCHEDULE... Williams golf competes in both the
fall and spring. We feel that the strength of our schedule aids in
the development of our players. We have a good mix of tournament
and match competitions, which include the NESCAC Championship, the
Little Three Championship, the New Englands, our own two-day
invitational and a Co-Ed District Championship played at Taconic
Golf Club.
SPRING TRIP... We take advantage of our two-week
Spring Break trip to travel down south or out west. This allows us
to get a jump on the spring season by playing in places like St.
Simon's Island in Georgia, the Vero Beach and Hobe Sound areas of
Florida and/or the Phoenix/Scottsdale areas in Arizona. During this
time we compete in a few events against other teams and look
forward to our annual Alumni/Varsity competition, which has proved
to be highly successful. Few schools can match the opportunities
that Williams players have had over the years.

ALUMNI RELATIONS... Golf will be a part of your
life through the years, well beyond graduation. Events like the
Annual Alumni/Guest Golf Tournament, Reunion Weekends and special
events are well attended by Eph alumni. As a golfer, it's nice to
know that you've got a superb course to play when you return.
MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT... Members of Taconic Golf
Club have the chance to compete against the Varsity in the annual
Shultz Cup Match and with them in the popular College/AM
Tournament. Their support of the golf team is a unique feature of
the program.
OUR GOAL... Perhaps the best reason for attending
Williams is our goal: Golf at Williams is meant to complement your
education; not act as a substitute for it.
