Port St. Lucie, FL – The Williams men’s golf
team kicked off their spring season as they hosted the Sunshine
Invitational on the Ryder Course at PGA Village.
Williams, Hamilton, and Trinity were the three NESCAC teams featured in the event. These three teams, along with Middlebury, will be competing in late April for the all-important NESCAC Championship and automatic bid to the national championship.
Under sunny skies with some fierce winds at times, the Ephs fired a 313 today to finish third behind Hamilton, who shot 307, and Trinity, who shot a very impressive 293.
Tied for medalist honors and leading the Ephs was Jack Killea ’11, who fired a consistent and steady 1-under par 71 hitting 16 greens in regulation. Reid Longley of Trinity also shot a 71 to tie Killea.
First Year Jack Ervasti shot an 80 today with a large score on a par 5 that spoiled an otherwise consistent round. Three of the four juniors, Bob Camp ’11, Jake Wagner ’11, and Drew Murray ’11 all shot 81 anchoring the lineup, as sophomore Siwol Chang ’12 rounded out the lineup with an 82.
Individual players Wyatt Sparks ’13 and Chris Valle ’12 also posted scores, as Sparks shot a 79 and Valle finished his round with an 87.
Both Hamilton and Trinity had 4 scores in the 70’s, and Trinity sizzled to a 293 with three 74’s and the 71 from Longley, proving the great competition in the NESCAC and showing that Williams will need to step up and perform at a high level for the NESCAC Championship.
The Ephs look to continue to improve and sharpen their games for the rest of spring break in Port St. Lucie, FL, as they hope to put together a strong lineup for the Palamountain Invitational at Skidmore on April 11-12.
