Men's Golf Finishes 5th at Duke Nelson Invitational hosted by Middlebury

Middlebury, VT – After a solid showing in
the first round of the Duke Nelson Invitational, the Williams
Men’s Golf Team struggled today, finishing fifth out of
twenty teams, after holding a two shot lead going into today.
Starting the round in steady light rain and gusty conditions, the
Ephs fired a 319 for a 626 total for the two rounds, placing them
behind Salem State, Trinity, Middlebury, and Manhattanville.
"I don't think we were intimidated, but we certainly didn't come
out firing on all cylinders. What was our savior on day one (a lack
of big numbers) was our downfall today," said Coach Pohle.
Chris Valle '12 was the team's steadiest player this weekend
shooting 77 each day for a 154 total. Jake Wagner '11 had the
team's best score today with a 76 to go along with an opening round
79 for a 155 total. First round team medalist Jack Ervasti '13 had
a rough day posting an 86, combining with his first round of 75 for
a 161 total. Juniors Jack Killea ’11 shot an 83 on day 2 for
a 160 total (77-83) and Bob Camp ‘11 also shot 83 on day two
to go with his opening round of 78 on his birthday for a 161
total.
"Salem St. posted a great 297 total today and I don't think we
could have stayed with them to win the event, but we are all a bit
disappointed to drop that far down the ladder even though those
teams played pretty well to get by us,” said Coach Pohle.
“I think everyone understands their need to become more
consistent with their scoring, but knowing it and actually
executing it is the problem right now. It was kind of ironic that
Tiger Woods, the best player in the world, said today after winning
the FedEx Cup that the accomplishment he was most proud of this
year was his consistency."
The team now prepares to fill-out the roster that will represent
the school in the NESCAC Championship Qualifier this weekend. The
event originally scheduled as a home event at the Taconic Golf Club
has been moved to Waubeeka Golf Links, our neighboring club, in
South Williamstown because of problems with the greens at Taconic.
"We're performing a crash course on how to play Waubeeka this week
and our players are looking forward to the championship," explained
Coach Pohle. The 6,229 yard par 71 Waubeeka layout is sure to be a
test, as players will map out their strategy during practice this
week.
