WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – It was the Ephs varsity “B”
squad that proved to be the stronger squad for the men’s golf
team today as they finished in a three-way tie for third place just
two strokes behind the leaders in the first round of the Williams
Invitational this afternoon. The “B” team is tied with
Hamilton and Salem State with a score of 299, just falling short of
the top spot held by St. Lawrence and Skidmore each with scores of
297.
It was a balanced scoring effort that allowed the “B”
team to nearly match the likes of Skidmore’s perennially
formidable program. Senior Matt Felser ‘s score of 72, the
fifth-best round of the day, led the charge, followed by freshman
Chris Valle with a 75, and Bob Camp ’11 and Galen Jackson
’09 who each posted a 76.
The "A" team struggled a bit, but still managed a 308 total - good
enough for a 9th place tie with Amherst College. Jack Killea '11
(74) and Tyler Zara '09 (76) paced the efforts by the "A" which
will look to shave strokes off there score to move up the
leaderboard.
“It was a day of mixed results, but ultimately I think the
guys on both squads feel like they could have done better,”
commented Jackson. “Although we’re disappointed,
we’re hoping to use the “B” team’s success
as momentum to carry into tomorrow’s round.”
Play tomorrow begins with an 8:00 am shotgun start at the Taconic
Golf Club. Although the Ephs would have liked to come out a little
stronger, the victory is still well within reach for both
“A” and “B”.
