Williams Wins Williams/Middlebury Cup, 50 1/2 to 21 1/2

Williamstown, MA – Coming in with the
lead in the final round of the Williams/Middlebury Cup Matches, the
Williams Men’s Golf team took charge and won back the title
from Middlebury to the tune of 50 ½ to 21 ½ at
Taconic Golf Club today.
Playing in a tournament on home soil for the first time this
spring season, the Ephs pounded the Panthers 28 ½ to 7
½ in the singles and aggregate format today, adding onto the
slim 22 to 14 lead the Ephs held after round one from the singles
and best-ball matches.
Today’s result seemed to be a positive lift that the
men’s golf team had been looking for since the start of the
spring portion of the season. "As all of us would admit, we have
been struggling,” said Coach Pohle, “but I think as a
team we played very well this weekend and got some very good play
from a large number of players."
Tyler Zara and Galen Jackson secured all 9 points in their
matches, while Matt Felser and Bob Camp recorded 8 1/2 of the
possible 9 points in theirs. Jake Wagner and Jack Killea were able
to record 6 more points in their match and Siwol Chang and Drew
Murray produced the final 5 points.
Bob Camp ‘11 fired the best round of the day with a fine 72
and got strong support from Tyler Zara ‘09 (75), Jack Killea
‘11 (75), Matt Felser ‘09 (77) and Jake Wagner
‘11 (77). "We're in the final stages of selecting the 5 man
roster for the NESCAC Championship at Middlebury, which will be
held this upcoming weekend," said Coach Pohle.
The top 4 teams from last fall's NESCAC tournament will be playing
for the right to represent the conference at the NCAA's in Port St.
Lucie, FL in May. Reflecting on the weekend, Coach Pohle added, "I
think things are rounding into shape and we are hoping that the
team continues it's improvement through next weekend which should
be a great event with some great competition."
