PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – The Williams Men’s Golf team completed their first competitive round of 2009 at the Sunshine Invitational today on the Ryder Course at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL. Playing along with the Ephs were Huntingdon College, Luther College, and Middlebury College.

The Ephs shot a team total of 310 and are currently in third place behind Luther, who shot 288, and Huntingdon, who shot 291. Middlebury is currently in fourth with a team total of 323.

Drew Murray '11 came out strong today with a 73, coming in on the back nine with a stellar 2-under 34. Matt Felser '09 and Jake Wagner '11 also had solid rounds with steady 78’s to anchor the team total. Jack Killea '11 and Siwol Chang '12 both had tough starts but fought back strong, finishing with 81 and 82, respectively. Bob Camp '11 also had a tough day, finishing with an 84.

Tyler Zara '09, Galen Jackson '09, and Chris Valle '12 also played as individuals today. Tyler Zara had a great showing in his first round back today with a 75 as an individual. Galen Jackson and Chris Valle struggled to find their games today, but are positively developing and sharpening their games as the spring portion of the golf season starts up again.

“Our players had a good showing out there today based on the conditions and the timing of the match in the season,” stated head coach Rick Pohle. “I can see that having this tournament is a great way to establish the focus for competition, as opposed to casual rounds. A little bit of pressure on their games at this stage will be a great benefit for them down the road. Some people may say that it could backfire on players (by playing poorly), but I think in that case it still gives a feedback necessary to identify individual and team weaknesses.”

The final round begins tomorrow at 11:00 am at the Pete Dye Course at The PGA Golf Club.
