Ephs finish 3rd at NESCAC Qualifier

CLINTON, NY – The Willams men's golf team moved up one
spot on the second day of play at the Skenandoa Club to finish
third in the NESCAC Men's Golf Championship Qualifier.
The Ephs carded a 305 today and their two-day total of 614 was
eight shots behind first place Trinity (606) and one behind second
place Middlebury (613), while host Hamilton finished fourth (616)
and secured the final spot in the NESCAC championship event to be
played in April at Trinity's home course.
The winner of the spring NESCAC championship event will earn the
NESCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship slated for May.
Josh Grossman of Trinity had the day's top round with a one-over
par 72 and also was the medalist of the weekend with a two-day
total of 146.
For the second day in a row the Williams first year trio of Jake
Wagner, Bob Camp and Jack Killea led the way with the three lowest
rounds. At the turn the Ephs were in jeopardy of being overtaken by
Tufts and knocked out of the NESCAC spring championship tournament.
"As we made the turn,
only one player had a score under 40 (Jack Killea's 39) and the
much more difficult back nine awaited," commented Eph head coach
Rick Pohle. "We didn't have too much room for error
in scores since the teams we were paired with were playing well."
Today it was Jake Wagner scoring the best round for the purple
with a three-over par 74, while Bob Camp fired a 75 and Jack Killea
shot a 76. Wagner carded a 34 on the back nine, Camp shot a 75 and
Killea came through with a 37. Senior Brendan Conley posted the
Ephs' fourth scoring round of the day when he shot a 79 and junior
Tyler Zara shot an 86.
Over the two days Wagner was the Ephs top performer with a total
of 150, followed by Killea (151), Camp (154) Conley (159) and Zara
(168). Wagner finished fourth overall, while Killea was 8th and
Camp tied for 12th.
Jake Wagner earned First Team All-NESCAC honors and classmates Jack Killea and Robert Camp collected Second Team All-NESCAC honors.
Next up for the Ephs the Skidmore Invitational on Wednesday in
Saratoga Springs, NY, before they close the fall portion of their
schedule with a two-day tournament at Seven Oaks Golf course in
Hamilton, NY hosted by Hamilton College next weekend.
