MIDDLEBURY, VT -- Facing a huge deficit from day one, the men's varsity golf team gained some respect by playing the Sunday Singles Matches to a 5-5 stalemate with the Panthers of Middlebury College. "Middlebury is a very good golf team and their program has really solidified over the past 4-5 years," commented Eph coach Rick Pohle. "It was a great learning experience for our team in preparation for the upcoming Little Three Championship at Taconic GC on Wednesday."
The split on day two gives Middelbury the first Colonial Cup
title by the score of 13-7.
"We got a much better effort today in the singles matches - in
particular from Nicholas Nottebohm, Matt Felser and Jeff Lin.
Several other players were pushed to their limits and responded
quite well to the challenge. I feel that today everyone really
competed in their efforts, whereas yesterday we lost sight of the
context of the competition."
Trailing 8-2 after the first day of matches, the 5-5 second day
outcome left the final result at 13-7, although the final margin of
victory is a little misleading. Of the 20 matches that we played
over the 2 days, 4 were halved (tied) and 7 ended up with the
winner posting a 1 up margin of victory - unfortunately, we lost
all seven of the 1 up verdicts (6 of which were on the first
day).
Williams returns to the links on Wednesday with the chance to win
their 11th straight Little Three Championship, which will be played
at Taconic Golf Club.
