Ephs trail Middelbury 8-2 after 1st day of Colonial Cup

MIDDLEBURY, VT -- Playing in a format similar to the PGA Tour's
Ryder Cup, the Williams men's golf team found out what the American
team has experienced in recent years. "We played a lot of close
matches today - losing 6 matches one down with 4 of those losses
coming on the last hole, but I hope we learned something today
about match play strategy," said Eph coach Rick Pohle.
The first round matches featured five Foursome matches (alternate
shot) and the second round matches consisted of five Fourball
(better ball of twosomes) - tomorrow's matches will be Singles
Match Play (10 matches).
"I wouldn't say it is impossible to overturn this large deficit,
but it will definitely be an uphill battle all the way," stated
Pohle. "Each player has to go out there and concentrate on putting
in his best effort against his opponent. Match play is a strange
animal and momentum plays a big part in the outcome - we have to
grab that momentum and get them pressing. If the early matches can
set the tone, we may be able to turn the tables on them. Even if we
come up a little short, I think tomorrow's play is important if we
are going to be successful in next week's "Little Three"
Championship at Taconic."
Play begins at 9:00 am tomorrow.
