PHILADELPHIA, PA – Last Saturday Williams College Men finished third behind Jacksonville and Temple on the Schuylkill River. The 2V boat and freshman boat placed fourth in their finals. The 3V four did not qualify for the final.
The Murphy Cup was the inaugural regatta of the spring season. The crew arrived directly from their Myrtle Beach Spring training trip eager to race. Eagerness translated into a tense qualifying heat. In the first half of the race the crew was a bit restless, but calmed throughout the second 1000 meters. The Ephs managed a second place finish behind Fordham, and their time was the fifth seed for the final.
The headwind increased as the afternoon progressed. Williams rowed the final with much more composure and beat their seed to claim third. Jacksonville and Temple had a quick start and widened their lead over the course of the race.
Williams’ 2V raced in a straight final between the 1V races. After a series of botched starts by other crews, the 2V rowed a solid race and placed fourth. The 3V four had a rough race, but the crew remains quite optimistic about the rest of the season. The freshman won their heat early in the day and also claimed fourth in their final.
Williams hopes to learn from its first race and looks forward to meeting Trinity in future racing.
