LAKE QUINSIGAMOND, MA – The Men’s Crews swept Wesleyan this Saturday. Williams beat Wesleyan by 10 seconds in the 1V event, 16 seconds in the 2V event, and almost 30 seconds in the 3V event.
Williams’ 1V had a rough starting sequence despite the flat-water conditions. As a result, the crew was down on Wesleyan through the 400 meter mark. After Williams settled, they started to walk on Wesleyan. The push continued on to the finish. Williams won by 9.9 seconds and added a set of Wesleyan shirts to their wardrobe. Most importantly, Williams men defended the Saratoga Oar for another year.
The Saratoga Oar is the trophy of the Little Three Rowing. The trophy commemorates the winning Wesleyan crew of 1878, but Little Three racing dates back to 1969. Amherst was not represented because their program fails to support a Varsity 8.
The 2V faced Ithaca and Colby in addition to their Wesleyan opposition. Their race was even more dominant. Ithaca finished 13 seconds behind Williams, followed by Colby and Wesleyan.
The 3V crew was composed primarily of rowers from the novice event. Their result showed the greatest dominance. Ithaca finished 23 seconds behind Williams and Wesleyan finished further behind.
Next week, racing returns to the Ephs’ home course at Lake Onota in Pittsfield. Williams will face Ithaca, Coast Guard, Marist, Bates, and Tufts. The following weekend is the New England Rowing Championships at Lake Quinsigamond again.
