Williams Men Fall to Trinity, WPI

LAKE QUINSIGAMOND, MA – The Williams 1V boat lost to rivals Trinity by 4.6 seconds at this Saturday’s races.  The 2V claimed second behind Trinity by 10 seconds, and the Novice men lost by 16 seconds to Trinity. The 3V 4+ claimed third.

It was a brisk day in Worcester. The air was cold and the course had swirling strong crosswinds. At the start, Trinity was seeded in lane 1 and Williams in lane 2. WPI and University of Rochester claimed lanes 3 and 4. The boats were aligned and sent off by a countdown start. Williams had a stronger start than at the Murphy Cup and managed to be slightly up on the field. After the first 20 or so strokes Trinity settled to a powerful rhythm and walked away from the field.

Williams took a few moves during the body of the piece and managed to put a 5-seat lead over WPI. In the last 500 meters both Williams and WPI brought up the stroke rate in the sprint. In the final moments WPI’s bowball ended up ahead by 4/10’s of a second.

The crew was pleased with their performance and stuck to their race plan well. Dan Costanza ’11 observed that “the boat had a solid race. We got off the line fast and held favored Trinity through their push at the middle off the race. We got pushed around a bit by the stiff cross-wind in the second 1000, but in the end a solid race of which to build. WPI’s victory reclaimed the Donohue Cup for the first year in recent memory. Head Coach Peter Wells '79 remarked: "We have work to do; and we have to figure out how to race at higher rates and speeds in order to be able to make up the deficit that exists now. Trinity and WPI appear to be #1 and # 2 in NE."

The Williams 2V raced well in their event, but Trinity ended up with an even greater margin. The boat, Stroked by Noah Schoenholtz '12 seemed very connected according to Coach Wells. The Freshman race was won easily by Trinity’s A –boat, but the B-boat gave Williams a better race, finishing just over 6 seconds ahead.

Next week the crew will face Wesleyan and some representative of Amherst at the Litthe Three Regatta. The race will be held again at Lake Quinsigamond. Coach Wells calls next week's racing "pivotal to launch the season on a more upward pathway by answering some questions about personnel and lineups."
