Williams Men Claim 2nd, 3rd in Varsity Fours, Then Claim 3rd in Varsity Eights At Head of the Fish Regatta
SARATOGA, NY - It was a mixed day for the men's team at this weekend's regatta. After an early departure at 6 am from campus the crew traveled to the muddied banks of the Saratoga Lake. The Varsity Squad first took to the water in two fours, one composed of seniors and sophomores (A-Boat) and the other of just juniors (B-Boat).
The A-boat was the first crew to race in the starting queue. Over 10 berths later came the B-boat. The first 800 meters of the course contained a few curves and both boats navigated well. The A-boat powered down the course while the B-boat successfully passed many crews down the finish.
WPI claimed the race by an astonishing 28 seconds while the two Williams boats were only 1 ½ half seconds apart. The crews were pleased with their showing after a solid week of training in fours. Immediately after docking, the athletes assembled for the eights race.
Williams was off in the fourth berth. The race was strong but lacked the "pop" typical from the 1V. 6 of the 9 athletes had already competed in the fours event scarcely an hour before. Despite testing a new rig and a different boat, the Williams crew managed to come in third, only two-seconds behind the Hobart, the leading crew. Colgate placed second. Nathaniel Lim '11 remarked: "Guys have seen the payoffs of solid summer training and now are excited to train even harder this winter in preparation for the spring."
The other boats fared quite well. The Williams 2V finished 2nd behind Hobart in the 2v category, the 3v claimed seventh in that same event. The freshman 8 claimed third in the novice 8 category behind Syracuse and Hobart. Earlier in the day, two freshman fours claimed first and third in their event. Head Coach Wells, "Overall I was pleased as we improved our rowing in the 4's and it showed in the overall results with frosh and the varsity. We continue to find out what we are doing well and do it even better, and we find the areas which do need improvement and listen to how we can address those."
Captain Cameron Skinner '10 reflected on the final race of the fall season: "With the fall season now behind us, we look to move on to a healthy dose of winter training. As we learned last season, spring races are won in the winter and we have our eye set on another championship this year."
