
Williamstown, MA –Three will beat one
every time and that was the case tonight as Brandeis University
rode the scoring efforts of Terrell Hollins (20), Kenny Small (20)
and Vytas Kriskus (19) to subdue stubborn Rhode Island College
(RIC) 76-65. RIC was led by senior Jake Grimes who dropped in 20
points.
With the win Brandeis improved to 22-6 and advances to the
Sectional Finals vs. the winner of the Williams vs. SUNYIT game
that follows. RIC finishes the season at 22-8
Brandeis withstood a personal 11-point splurge by Jake Grimes to hold a 55-53 advantage.
RIC would get to within one at 58-57 with 7:42 to play after RIC’s Mason Choice stole a pass and dropped the ball inside for Darius Debnam to layin. RIC then took their last lead at 59-58 on two free throws by Debnam at 7:10.
With just under six minutes to play the Judges’ Kenny Small hit a short jumper and then corralled a miss inside and scored on a put back while being fouled. Finishing the three-point play Small gave Brandeis a 63-59 lead.
A Kriskus bounce pass to Hollins for a reverse layin boosted the Brandeis lead 69-61 with 3:04 left.
Terrell Hollins fashioned a double-double as he collected a game-high 16 boards and heloped Brandeis post a 40-31 advantage on the glass. Debnam led the Anchormen with eight rebounds.
Brandeis hit on 51% of their shots with Small going 7-10 and Hollins hitting on 9 of 14. RIC shot nonly 39% from the field for the game.
Rhode Island College (RIC) opened the contest with three straight threes, two by Nick Manson and a layup by Mason Choice to build an early 11-4 lead. The RIC Anchormen led 15-4 at the first media timeout at 15:33.
The Anchormen lifted their lead to nine, 20-11, at 12:45 on a three ball from Carl Lee. With RIC up 20-11 Brandeis roared back with a 12-0 run to take a 23-20 lead on a Vytas Kriskus three from deep on the right side.
William Williams got two back for RIC with a steal and put back of his own missed layup. Terrell Hollins scored inside and capped off the traditional three with a free throw to give Brandeis a four-point cushion 26-22.
A Carl Lee steal and dunk for RIC tied the score at 26, but that was followed by a Terrell Hollins inside hoop and a layin and free throw by Kriskus to build the Judges’ lead to five, 31-26.
Trailing 33-28 RIC got an 18-foot jumper and three from Antone Gray to tie game at 33.
RIC’s Jake Grimes made one of two free throws with 17 seconds left and then tipped away an inside attempt by Terrell Hollins to send RIC to the locker room up 34-33.
Terrell Hollins led Brandeis with 11 points and eight rebounds and Antone Gray led RIC with seven points. Both teams snared 17 rebounds in the first 20 minutes, Brandeis hit on 46% of their floor shots, including three of four from beyond the arc. RIC was 5-13 from distance and hit on 42% of their floor shots. The Judges committed 10 turnovers and the Anchormen had seven miscues.
