SALEM, Va. --- The University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point won the NCAA Division III Men’s
Basketball National Championship for the third time in seven years
as the Pointers out-lasted Williams College, 78-73, on Saturday in
the Salem Civic Center.
The three wins for UW-Stevens Point (29-4) are the most for any
one team in the 15 D-III men’s basketball championships
hosted in the Roanoke Valley since 1996. UWSP won the 2004
and 2005 national crowns, also defeating Williams (30-2) in the
former of the two events.
Down 54-44 with 11:02 to play, UW-Stevens Point went on a 16-5 run
to regain its first lead of the game since 24-23 in the first
half. Matt Moses, the NCAA Division III Championship Series
Most Outstanding Player, gave the Pointers the lead for good with a
lay-up at the 5:59 mark for a 60-59 advantage.
Defense and timely scoring keyed UWSP’s push down the
stretch. Jared Jenkins, also a member of the All-Tournament
Team, canned a pair of three-pointers in the final 5:24.
Moses, Dan Tillema and Jerrel Harris connected on clutch free
throws, leading the Pointers to an 8-of-9 showing from the line
down the stretch.
Moses led all scorers and four Pointers in double figures with 22
points and seven boards. He went 6-for-6 from the
stripe. Jenkins registered 17 points that included a 3-for-3
day from three-point range. Tillema chipped in 15 points and
Louis Hurd added 10 markers.
All-Tournament Team members Blake Schultz and Troy Whittington led
four Ephs in double digits. Schultz, the 2010 Jostens Trophy
winner, tallied 20 points to go with six rebounds.
Whittington picked up a double-double with 19 points and a
game-best 11 rebounds. He also notched five of the
Ephs’ six blocked shots. James Wang
recorded 17 points, and Alex Rubin added 11 markers.
