Blake Schultz to be featured at Pittsfield's Hoop Club Scholarship Event April 29th

PITTSFIELD, MA -- The Hoop Club Hall of Fame and Pittsfield Public Schools Athletic Department are pleased to present the 2010 Hoop Club Scholarship Awards Ceremony scheduled for

April 29th at the G.E.A.A. in Pittsfield.  Williams College guard, Blake Schultz, who recently led the Ephs to the NCAA Division III National Championship game, will be featured as the event’s guest speaker.

Since 1998, the Pittsfield Hoop Club has contributed close to $50,000 to local student-athletes through their scholarship program.  In addition to investing in the future of local student-athletes, the organization is also devoted to recognizing former players, coaches, and contributors to the game.

The evening begins with a 6 PM reception and includes programming related to local high school and college basketball, as well as the 2010 scholarship presentations. There will also be a silent auction as part of the program, with a wide variety of sports memorabilia items up for bid.  The event is open to guests of all ages with proceeds benefiting the Pittsfield Hoop Club Scholarship Program and Pittsfield Public Schools Athletics.

This marks the second year in which Pittsfield’s student-athletes are being recognized publicly. Last year’s event, featured Boston Celtic Hall of Famer K.C. Jones and the NBA Championship Trophy, offered local basketball fans an affordable night of entertainment while supporting a great cause.

Considering the theme for this event centers on basketball and academic achievements, Blake Schultz is an ideal guest.  “He’s a special player on the court, and a special person in the classroom and community”, said Pittsfield Public Schools athletic director Jim Abel.  “Blake serves as a great example for our aspiring student-athletes.”

Leading the # 2 ranked Ephs to the NCAA National Championship Game in March, Shultz averaged 19 points per game.  The senior pre-med major with a 3.29 grade point average was recognized with the prestigious Jostens Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation’s top Division III basketball player displaying exceptional athletic ability, academic achievement, and community service.  Schultz was also named a 1st Team All-American, New England Player of the Year, and NESCAC Conference MVP.

Tickets to the event are $15 per person or $20 per couple.  A table of 10 may be purchased for $120.  To purchase tickets, make a donation, or to obtain more information about the evening, please call Tim Carroll (413-464-1825) or Jim Abel (413-499-9522). Tickets are also available in advance at Sideline Saloon on Fenn Street in Pittsfield.
