Ephs Win Rose City Classic 74-58

MADISON, NJ - For the second straight night a balanced scoring attack propelled the Ephs (2-0) to victory. With four players scoring in double-figures, Williams dispatched the host Drew University Rangers (1-1) by a score of 74-58 in the championship of the Rose City Classic.
Williams senior point guard Chris Shalvoy was named Tournament MVP after following up a 23 point performance in the first round with 13 points in 27 minutes in the championship game. Sophomore Blake Shultz led Williams with 20 points and was named to the All-Tourney Team.
For the Rangers it was Gerard Mullin leading the way with 24 points to lead all scorers, including a sizzling 6 of 8 from beyond the arc.
"They had some smaller guys shooting threes that gave us some problems," said Eph coach Dave Paulsen.
In the end the Ephs' size advantage worked to their advantage, as for the second straight night the Ephs posted a plus-10 rebounding margin.
Regarding the Ephs' prowess on the glass thus far, Paulsen dryly attributed it to the team being "a little bigger than we used to be," however he also said "it's been a point of emphasis for us this year."
Despite holding the Rangers to just 41% shooting, Coach Paulsen once again expressed a desire to see improvement on the defensive end. However if the Ephs continue shooting the ball the way they have, they might not need it: Williams finished the tournament shooting nearly 50% from the field and 47% from three-point land.
Eph freshman Harlan Dodsen again contributed double-digit points in limited time, this time scoring 12 points in just 18 minutes, and senior Chris Rose added four three-pointers for 12 points.
Williams will return to action at Little Three rival Wesleyan on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
