Field Hockey wins thriller against Union in OT

Schenectady, NY— Sally Cobb scored the game-winner with 2:58 left in overtime Tuesday night to lift the Williams College field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Union College.
Williams improved to 2-0 on the season while Union dropped to
1-1. The Ephs will play their first home game Saturday for a noon
contest against Connecticut College on Renzie Lamb Field.
With 21:34 left in the game, Williams faced its first scoring
deficit of the season when Union's Kelsey Powers scored from a pass
by Tyler Willey. But the Ephs powerhouse forward, Meighan McGowan
answered with 75 seconds left in the first half, wheeling around
two defenders to score.
K.K. Krieg scored during a scramble in front of the goal (asst. by
Sally Cobb) with 40:46 left in the game. The Ephs held onto that
lead until 1-second left in regulation when Union's Tyler Willey
scored, assisted by Mallory Mason, 35 yards from the goal.
Sudden death overtime lasted 12 minutes and 2 seconds —
junior Cobb scored her first goal of the season from a pass from
Meighan McGowan.
Williams out shot Union 15 to 8 and Beth Baker played the entire
game, earning 6 saves.
Head Coach Alix Rorke was happy with the teams ability to recover
after a difficult first half, "we played a lot better than the
first half…our communication and passing improved."
The upperclassmen were able to motivate the team against a Union
squad that never gave up, "Union's so improved, they came out on
fire…we had to dig deep to win, I'm really proud of how we
played," Rorke said.
This early OT game proved to be a good test for the Ephs, and the
team answered, "playing as a unit in the 2nd half", according to
Rorke, and coming through with the victory.
