11 Ephs collect All-NESCAC honors

Eleven members of the 2008 Williams football team (6-2) that
defeated Amherst for a fourth consecutive year and captured a
fourth straight outright Little Three title have been accorded
All-NESCAC honors.
First Team selections include senior RB Brian Morrissey, senior OL
John Szawlowski and senior LB Trevor Powers who all earned First
Team honors for the second straight year. Joining this senior trio
on the First Team are senior DL Charlie Birns, senior DB Tim Batty
and junior PK Scott Sobolewski.
Five Ephs earned Second Team honors with senior OL Henry
Szawlowski repeating as a Second Team choice, senior WR Ryan Powell
(a First Team selection in 2007), senior TE Austin Norris, senior
DL Devin McLoughlin and junior DB Ikenna Iheoma.
Morrissey (Winchester, MA) concluded his Eph career as the
all-time leader in rushing yards for the Ephs in Division III play
with 2,682 yards, an average of 4.4 a carry and 124.4 a game. He
led NESCAC in rushing in 2007 and 2008. This season Morrissey
rambled for 995 yards and scored 11 TDs.
John Szawlowski (Hatfield, MA) was a key member of an Eph o-line
that helped establish the top running game in the conference with
152.4 yards a game. The Ephs also threw for 217.6 yards a game.
Powers (Danvers, MA) recorded 68 tackles on the year with 42 solos
and he became the all-time leader at Williams in total tackles in
Division III play with 165.
Batty (Chenango Bridge, NY), one of the top cover men in the
league rang up 38 solo tackles and had six assists in 2008. His
total of 98 solo tackles is a Williams Division III record.
Birns (Scarsdale, NY) was the sack leader in NESCAC with 8 and he
also added 10.5 tackles for a loss.
The Eph defense was tied for first in NESCAC in points allowed
(17.5), was #1 in pass defense, turnover margin +1.12 and pass
defense efficiency (94.9).
Sobolewski (Clifton Park, NY) topped NESCAC in PAT accuracy
converting on 21 of 22 attempts for a 95.5 success rate. His PAT
after the Morrissey TD in the fourth quarter at Amherst was the
difference maker in the Ephs' 24-23 win. He connected on four of
eight FG attempts on the year. In addition his kickoffs were over
60 yards on average.
Henry Szawlowski teamed with twin brother John to help generate
370 yards of offense per game, third best in NESCAC. The Ephs
averaged 26.9 points a game.
Powell (Fairfax, VA), though limited by injuries most of the
season, still managed to haul in 41 passes for 419 yards and 5
TDs.
Norris (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) earned his first conference
honor on the strength of his blocking at TE and out of the Eph
backfield. He did catch one pass this season for 15 yards.
McLoughlin (Bedford, NY) held the Eph interior defensive line
together all season with his consistently strong play. He recorded
16 solo tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, one hurry and
recovered one fumble.
Iheoma (Holland, PA) had a breakout season with a team-high 8 pass
breakups and two interceptions. He finished fourth on the team in
tackles with 36 (28 solos).
