ECAC Northeast honors for Szawlowski, Birns & Batty

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Three Eph seniors who were instrumental in
leading Williams to a combined 26-6 record over the last four years
have earned All-ECAC-Northeast First Team Honors. Left offensive
tackle John Szawlowski (Hatfield, MA), defensive end Charlie Birns
(Scarsdale, NY) and defensive back Tim Batty (Chenango Bridge, NY)
form the honored Eph trio.
Szawlowski, Birns and Batty were key contributors to the 2006 Ephs
that went 8-0, post four consecutive wins over archrival Amherst
and captured four straight Little Three titles.
John Szawlowski is the first Eph since LB Graham Goldwasser in 2003
to be honored as an AFCA NCAA Division III First Team
All-American.
A three-year starter and three-year All-NESCAC First Team selection
for the Ephs, he was previously named to the New England Football
Writers Division II-III All Star Team in both 2007 and 2008, named
to the 2008 D3footbal.com All-East First Team, 2008 D3football.com
All-American Second Team, and to the ECAC-Northeast First Team in
2007.
Birns capped off his career with a stellar senior campaign that saw
him lead NESCAC in sacks with eight. Birns's sacks resulted in 57
yards lost. He had 10.5 tackles for a loss, broke up one pass,
recorded two QB hurries, recovered one fumble and blocked two
kicks. His 36 tackles (26 solos) was tied for fourth best on the
Eph team. Earlier this fall Birns was named to the All-NESCAC First
Team.
Batty graduates as the Williams leader in solo tackles in Division
III play with a total of 98. This season Batty was second on the
Eph squad in tackles with 44 (36 solos). One of NESCAC's top cover
men, Batty intercepted three passes on the year and broke up five.
He also chipped in with 1.5 tackles for a loss two forced fumbles
and a blocked kick. Batty was also a 2008 All-NESCAC First Team
selection.
