Wesleyan University
(4-2)
1:00 pm
Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007
Corwin Stadium at Andrus Field
Middletown, CT
SERIES: Began in 1881 and features the first game
ever played by the Ephs. This series is tied with Amherst vs.
Wesleyan and Hampden-Sydney vs. Randolph-Macon for the seventh most
played rivalry in Div. III.
Williams won last year's match-up at Weston Field on homecoming,
51-21. The most recent Wesleyan win came in 1999, in Middletown,
33-28.
COACHES: The Ephs' Mike Whalen (24-6) is in his
fourth year as the Williams head coach. Whalen was previously the
Ephs' head wrestling coach from 1996 to 2003, and the offensive
line coach for the same span, including the last three with years
as offensive coordinator. Whalen is 3-0 vs. Wesleyan.
Whalen guided the 2006 Ephs to the sixth perfect season in
Williams history, extending the Eph win streak to 14 and earning
NESCAC Coach of the Year honors. He was also the only New England
coach to finish in the top 25 in Liberty Mutual's Coach of the Year
program among coaches in all divisions of college football.
Whalen, a 1983 graduate of Wesleyan University, captained both the
football and wrestling teams while earning All-New England and
All-American honors three times. Whalen's football coaching resume
also includes stops at Springfield, Penn, Lafayette, and
Colgate.
Frank Hauser, also a Wesleyan graduate, is in his 16th year as the
head coach of the Wesleyan Cardinals and sports an overall record
of 64-62 and he is 2-13 vs. Williams.
LITTLE THREE: The Little Three is the nation's
oldest conference championship without a membership change and
dates back to 1910. Williams has won 44 outright Little Three
football titles -- Amherst 28 and Wesleyan 12. The Cardinals have
already dropped a 28-9 decision to Amherst, two weekends ago in
Amherst, MA.
This is the Ephs' first Little Three contest of the 2006 season,
as Amherst will come to Weston Field next weekend for the season
finale.
