Williams College Ephs (0-2)

Vs.

Bates College Bobcats (0-2)

1:00 PM

Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005

Weston Field

Williamstown, Mass.

SERIES: Began in 1988. Williams leads the series 18-1.  The Ephs had won all 15 meetings prior to the 2003 match-up on Weston Field, when the Bobcats pulled off a 10-7 upset. Last year in Lewiston, Maine the Ephs rallied from a 7-3 halftime deficit to win 27-7.

The last time the Ephs and Bobcats played on Weston Field it was in a torrential downpour and the Ephs got a 5-yard TD pass from QB Pat Lucey to TE Jim O'leary with 10:05 to play to overcome Bates 8-7. The game marked Pat Lucey's first collegiate start. Despite the conditions Lucey finished the game hitting on eight of 12 passes for 91 yards and one TD.

COACHES: The Ephs' Mike Whalen (20-6) is in his fourth year as the Williams head coach. Whalen was previously the Ephs' head wrestling coach from 1996 to 2003, and the offensive line coach for the same span, including the last three with years as offensive coordinator. Whalen is 3-0 vs. Bates.

Whalen guided the 2006 Ephs to the sixth perfect season in Williams history, extending the Eph win streak to 14 and earning NESCAC Coach of the Year honors. He was also the only New England coach to finish in the top 25 in Liberty Mutual's Coach of the Year program among coaches in all divisions of college football.

Whalen, a 1983 graduate of Wesleyan University, captained both the football and wrestling teams while earning All-New England and All-American honors three times. Whalen’s football coaching resume also includes stops at Springfield, Penn, Lafayette, and Colgate.

Bates' Mark Harriman is in his 10th year as head coach of the Bobcats and sports a record of 17-57. 2003 marked Harriman's first win over the Ephs. His career mark against Williams is 1-8
