Wacky affair between Keene State and Ephs ends in 13-13 tie after 11 innings

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA — A back-and-forth, wild affair between Keene State and Williams Wednesday ended in the bottom of the 11th inning with the Ephs scoring the tying run and having the winning run thrown out all on the same play.

The end result was 13-13 tie with the game called after the 11th because of darkness. Keene State moved to 10-8-1 on the year while Williams is now 9-8-1.

The game featured 26 runs, 40 hits, four errors and 11 pitchers.

The craziness began right off the bat in the first inning when the Owls opened up a 4-0 lead and Williams countered with six runs in its half. The Ephs still led 10-9 with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Cody Callahan’s RBI-double sent things into extra innings.

It appeared Keene State had the upper hand after a three-run top of the 11th made it 13-10 — Callahan’s one-out solo home run broke an 10-10 tie — but the Ephs loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame. A two-run single by Cameron Susk brought Williams within a run and, after a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Stephen Maier drove a ball to right field.

Keene State’s Bobby Doyon made a diving catch of the ball, but the Ephs’ Chad Brown tagged up and scored the tying run. However, Susk was eventually thrown out at the plate on the play, ending the inning and the game.

Keene State had 22 hits in the tie, with Doyon going 5 for 6 with a double, home run and two RBI. Callahan was 3 for 5 with a double, homer and four runs batted in. Anthony Cipolla and Tyler DiPrato both had three hits for the Owls.

The Ephs had 18 hits, with Al Mathews leading the way by hitting 4 for 6 with an RBI. Susk was 3 for 6 with five RBI, while Pat Barren was 3 for 4 with three doubles and three runs scored.
