Eastern Connecticut roughs up Ephs, 13-5

Box Score

PHOENIX, AZ. -- The Williams College baseball team fell to powerhouse Eastern Connecticut Monday, 13-5, to fall to 1-2 on the young season.

The Ephs will face Thomas (Me.) in a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m. EST.

Monday, the Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Trailing 7-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, Williams did fight back, scoring four times to make it a two-run game once again.

Chad Brown led off with a walk. Taylor Mondshein was hit by a pitch. Pat Barren's singled loaded the bases for first-year Andrew Bishop, who proceeded to bash a bases-clearing three-run double. Bishop came around on an RBI-single by Jim Entwisle.

That would be it for the Ephs however, as EConn responded with four runs in the seventh to make it 11-5 and tagged on single runs in the eighth and ninth to walk away 13-5 winners.

The loss went to Williams senior Paul Burgdorf, who lasted 4 1/3 innings while allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out three. All four runs he allowed were earned.

Williams had nine hits on the day, led once again by senior Al Mathews, who went 3 for 4 for the third straight contest and drove in one run. Bishop had two hits and three RBI for the Ephs.
