First-years Marino, Grossman hurl Ephs to first win

MESA, AZ. -- First-years Harry Marino and Dan Grossman combined
to hurl six no-hit innings in the nightcap of a doubleheader
Tuesday, helping the Williams College baseball team snap a
five-game losing streak and gain its first win of the season via a
12-3 decision over Calvin.
The Ephs dropped the first game to Calvin by a 10-6 score in extra
innings. The Ephs, 1-5, play Hamline Wednesday in a doubleheader
beginning at 3 p.m. MST.
Marino drew the start against Calvin in the nightcap. He allowed
three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first as Calvin took a
3-2 lead. But the left-hander did not give up a hit over the next
four innings. Grossman took over in the sixth with a 12-3 lead and
continued the mastery with two no-hit relief frames to close out
the victory.
Marino picked up his first collegiate win, going five innings
while allowing just the two hits. He walked three and struck out
three.
Marino's teammates supported him with a 13-hit attack the produced
12 runs. A five-run third inning put Williams uo for good at 7-3.
Robin Allemand led off with a single and moved to third on a single
by Al Mathews. Mathews then stole second before Pat Barren walked
to load the bases.
After an out, first-year Cameron Susk plated a run with a
fielder's choice. Taylor Mikell then singled home a run, and Jim
Entwisle followed and did the same. First-year Jamaal Johnson
capped the inning with a two-run single.
Mikell hit 3 for 4 with two RBI. Mathews was 3 for 4, Allemand was
2 for 4. Johnson had three RBI. Barrett Allison went 1 for 1 with a
double.
In the opener, the Ephs trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the
seventh, but with one out, Barren ripped a triple and scored the
tying run on a single by Chad Brown.
Calvin responded with six runs in the top of the eighth off Eph
reliever Dan Marcet to post a 10-4 win. Marcet went the final 1 2/3
innings and was saddled with the loss. Wilson Barr started and went
the first four innings, giving up three runs. Tom Hester went 2 1/3
innings and allowed one run.
Zach Stone was 2 for 4 for Williams, while Allemand was 2 for 5
and Brown 1 for 2 with two RBI.
