Ephs take split with Southern Maine

MESA, AZ. -- Max Pinto and Barrett Allison each drove in three runs in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday to help the Williams College baseball team earn a split with the University of Southern Maine and move to 9-3 overall.
The Ephs face Elmhurst in a single game beginning at 9:30 a.m. MST Wednesday.
After dropping a 9-3 decision to the Huskies in Tuesday's first game, the Ephs fell behind 4-1 after the first three innings of the nightcap. But they responded with four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the sixth to post a 14-4 victory.
In the deciding fourth, Al Mathews got things started with two outs when he singled. Junior Zach Stone followed with a single, and when it was misplayed in the outfield, Mathews scored. Barrett Allison then ripped an RBI-single and Robin Allemand walked. James DiCosmo reached on an error to load the bases and Pinto lined a two-run single for a 5-4 Williams lead.
The Ephs had 19 hits in the victory. Pinto was 4 for 5 with three RBI, while Allison was 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBI. Stone finished 3 for 4 at the plate and picked up the win on the mound by hurling 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief. He allowed just one hit and a single walk while striking out three.
Mathews, Robin Allemand, Taylor Mikell and Chad Brown all had two hits each.
In the first game, Southern Maine scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to snap a 1-1 tie en route to a 9-3 win. Paul Burgdorf started and was tagged with the loss for the Ephs, allowing seven hits and six runs, three earned, while walking two and fanning two.
Tom Coleman did throw two perfect innings of relief, striking out four.
The Ephs had nine hits in the loss. Allemand went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
