Ephs bash way to 20-13 win over Macalester

SCOTTSDALE, AZ. -- It's not often you can survive a 13-run inning by an opponent and 10 walks by your own pitching staff, but the Williams College baseball team did just that Friday, rallying for a 20-13 victory over Macalester College at Saguaro High School.
With the win, the Ephs improved to 6-1 overall. They take on Keene State Saturday at 2:30 p.m. MST in Chandler, Az.
The Ephs banged out 21 hits in the win over Macalester, led by senior Max Pinto, who went 4 for 6 with three doules and two RBI on the day. Barrett Allison and James DiCosmo had three hits each and Chad Brown smacked a three-run home run to ice the game in the ninth inning.
Williams led 7-0 after the top of the second inning, but Macalester erupted for 13 runs on only six hits in the bottom of the second to take a 13-6 lead. The Ephs crept back into the game and trailed 13-12 entering the top of the eighth.
Trey Pendrey was hit by a pitch to start the frame and erased on fielder's choice by James Allison, who took second on a wild pitch. Brother Barrett Allison scored James with an RBI-single to center, and took third on an error. DiCosmo then hit a deep fly ball to center for a sacrifice fly and a 14-13 Williams lead.
The Ephs put the game on ice in the ninth by scoring six more times. Pendrey had a two-run single and Brown capped the uprising with a three-run home run in his only at-bat of the game. Barrett Allison finished 3 for 7 with three RBI for Williams, while DiCosmo was 3 for 4. Taylor Mikell was 1 for 3 but reached base five times total (single, three walks, HBP). Robin Allemand wa 2 for 3 and Al Mathews 2 for 5.
Nick Daen started for Williams but lasted just 1 1/3 before coming out of the game with an injury. He allowed three hits and seven runs, six earned, while walking five and striking out two. Brett DeWare threw 2/3 of an inning, allowing four hits and six runs, all unearned, while issuing two walks.
First-year Tom Hester came on to toss two scoreless frames, giving up no hits and two walks while striking out two. Junior Zach Stone picked up the win by tossing four shutout innings. He allowed four hits and one walk while fanning three. Tom Coleman finished up with a scoreless ninth.
