Ephs sweep UMass-Boston to improve to 5-1

CHANDLER, AZ. -- The Williams College baseball team produced 24 runs Thursday en route to a 9-7, 11-6 sweep of UMass-Boston that saw the Ephs improve their record to 5-1.
Williams plays Macalester College Friday at 1 p.m. in Scottsdale.
The Ephs banged out 14 hits in the nightcap against UMass-Boston, led by senior Max Pinto, who went 4 for 5 with a double. Ryan Webster went 2 for 3 with a triple and Al Mathews was 2 for 4 in the victory.
The Ephs were nursing a 2-1 lead into the top of the third when they put together a three-run rally. Pinto started things with a drag bunt single. Taylor Mikell followed with a single and an error on a grounder off the bat of Tom Tysse loaded the bases. After an out, Mathews singled home one run, and Webster then singled to bring home two Ephs for a 5-1 lead.
First-year Wilson Barr made it stand up, hurling six solid innings. He allowed six hits and four runs, three earned, while walking three and striking out three. Classmate Brett DeWare threw the final frame, allowing two runs on two hits.
In the opener Williams trailed the Beacons 4-2 before erupting with a six-run bottom of the fourth. Mathews, Barrett Allison and Robin Allemand drew walks to load the bases with no outs. James DiCosmo plated a run with a fielder's choice. Two batters later, Mikell scored another run with his single. Chad Brown and Pat Barren followed with singles, and junior Zach Stone capped the uprising with a three-run double.
Mikell finished game one 3 for 3, while Allemand was 2 for 2 with two walks. Brown and Barren each went 2 for 4.
Senior Matt Gustafson started for Williams and went four-plus innings, allowing seven runs, just one earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out three. First-year Dan Marcet picked up the win by throwing three scoreless innings of relief. He gave up three hits, did not walk a batter, and fanned two.
