Ephs suffer first setback, 8-5, to Johns Hopkins

TEMPE, AZ. -- A three-run ninth inning Wednesday lifted Johns Hopkins to an 8-5 victory over Williams College at Tempe High School.
The loss was the first of the season for the Ephs against three wins. Williams plays a twinbill against UMass-Boston Thursday beginning at 1 p.m. MST.
Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first four innings Wednesday, but the Ephs rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Zach Stone drew a walk to start the frame, and singles by Al Mathews and Barrett Allison loaded the bases for sophomore Robin Allemand, who crushed a grand slam home over the fence in right-center field to knot things at four-all.
Williams took the lead with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Flynn led off with a single, Stone singled and Mathews was safe on a fielder's choice. First-year Pat Barren ran for Flynn and scored on an RBI-groundout off the bat of Barrett Allison.
Johns Hopkins tied the game with a single run in the top of the seventh and then struck for three runs off Eph reliever Tom Coleman in the ninth inning.
Junior southpaw Ben Horwitz got the start for Williams and went six full innings, allowing 12 hits and four runs, three earned, without walking a batter. He fanned four. First-year Tom Hester relieved and went two innings, allowing one run on no hits, and three walks. He struck out two.
Coleman took the loss, allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits and one walk over 2/3 of an inning.
Williams had 10 hits in the loss. Mathews went 3 for 4 with a triple.
