One of the finest all-around athletes to wear Williams College purple is returning to the Berkshires to serve as the Ephs assistant strength and conditioning coach. Ethan Brooks made quite a name for himself on the Williams College campus in earning All-America honors nine times in football and track & field.

Lasell Gym: They don't make them like they used to
A scant 83 years after the first renovation to the floor in Lasell Gym, one of the nation’s oldest collegiate gymnasiums still in use for varsity competition will have a total floor replacement beginning Aug. 9th. It’s expected to take about a month to replace the floor, but there’s no way to replace its memories and history.

Connor Kamm named USTFCCA Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year
No one would have predicted that Kamm would win this year’s NCAA 5K at the end of the 2009 season, considering a year ago he could not even break 15:30 in the event. He won this year in 14:28, just two seconds off his personal best and almost 62 seconds faster than he ran in 2009.

Inclement weather, which forced yesterday's baseball games to be halted in progress, led NESCAC officials to shorten the double-elimination tournament, effectively turning the Williams versus Tufts game into the championship. Despite a ten-run rally, the Ephs fell just short as the Jumbos claimed the NESCAC crown.

LAKE QUINSIGAMOND, MA – Williams 1V won the ECAC National Invitational Regatta for the first time in the program’s history. The 2V placed third to Michigan and Trinity for the best finish in that events history. The Novice 8+ also claimed bronze behind Trinity and Michigan. The Varsity 4 placed 4th, only 9 seconds behind the winner.

After pulling off the upset victory over second-seeded and fifth-ranked Amherst yesterday, Williams men’s tennis (11-6, 6-2 NESCAC) couldn’t muster a second upset bid over top-seeded and top-ranked Middlebury (18-2, 8-0) this afternoon in the NESCAC tournament championship match. The Panthers defeated the Ephs, 6-0, to claim their sixth title in the last seven years.

Third-seeded Williams men’s tennis (11-5, 6-2 NESCAC) avenged their regular season loss to second-seeded Amherst College (23-10, 7-1) in today’s second NESCAC semifinal match in a 5-3 victory. The Ephs used a critical 2-1 advantage in doubles play to propel themselves past a squad that had defeated them by a 7-2 margin on April 18.

It was a fitting end to the career at Chandler Gymnasium for seven seniors tonight, as Williams men’s basketball defeated Brandeis 71-57 to advance to Final Four in Salem, Virginia next Friday. The team pushed its record to 29-1 on the season and its already record breaking in-season win streak to 20 games.

First-seeded Williams men’s basketball defeated eighth-seeded Wesleyan 77-62 tonight to advance to the semi-finals of the NESCAC tournament. Williams, the second-ranked team in the country, improved its record to 24-1 with the victory, which was also the team’s 15th straight. The Cardinals fell to 11-14 with the loss.

Ephs Earn Home Ice With 4-1 Win Over Skidmore
The Williams men's hockey team earned a home postseason game for the second consecutive season, completing a weekend sweep by beating Skidmore 4-1 Saturday afternoon. Juniors Connor Olvany and Brian Malchoff each registered a goal and an assist, while Matty Masucci '11 and Alex Smigelski '10 each added a pair of assists. Sophomore Ryan Purdy played well in goal, turning aside 21 shots.

Second half surge leads Bates past Ephs into NESCAC semifinals
Sixth-seeded Bates (14-11) powered past third-seeded Williams (18-7) in a NESCAC quarterfinal game this afternoon in Chandler Gymnasium on the Williams College campus, 70-63. The Bobcats used a 20-1 run in a 5:54 stretch in the beginning of the second half to bury the Ephs, and avenged their regular season loss on January 16.

In the wake of the traditional senior day pregame ceremony, the purple and gold shot out of the gate, playing with intensity and heart for the full sixty minutes and eventually overtaking the Polar Bears in the final period. Junior Matt Masucci (Winthrop, Mass.) scored a short-handed goal at 8:49 of the third period to lift the visiting Williams College men's ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over host Babson College in an ECAC East/NESCAC matchup at the Babson Skating Center on Friday night. With the victory, the Ephs, ranked sixth in the nation by U.S. College Hockey Online, improved to 13-4-3 overall and 11-4-1 in the NESCAC. On January 26, 2008, Williams women’s basketball defeated Amherst at home to end the Lord Jeff’s 17-game win streak and bid for a perfect season. Ephs Come Up Just Short, Losing 4-2 to NESCAC Rival #9 Middlebury
The Williams College men's hockey team fell into a three-way tie for first place in the NESCAC, losing 4-2 to rival #9 Middlebury. Williams jumped out to a 2-0 lead, dominating much of the first period, but gave up three quick goals midway through the second period that proved to be the difference. The Ephs fought hard for the tying goal late in the game, but came up just short as the Panthers scored on an empy net goal with less than a minute left to seal the victory.

There are no undefeated teams left in division 3 men’s hockey. The Williams College men’s ice hockey team bested the only remaining undefeated team in the country, #2 Norwich, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain Alex Smigelski scored with just under ten minutes left in the game to give the Ephs their second lead of the game, and Williams hung on down the stretch for the victory. Sophomore goalie Ryan Purdy had an unbelievable game, shutting the door on one of the top offensive teams in the country while turning aside 48 shots.

Ephs Sweep Plymouth State Quad, Malo Breaks School Record for Pins
PLYMOUTH, NH- The Eph grapplers travelled to Plymouth State College to compete in a quad meet against Plymouth State (ranked 7th in New England), Bridgewater State (ranked 8th in New England), Norwich, and MIT’s club team. The Ephs dominated the day, winning all four of their matches decisively. As a team Williams lost only six of the forty they wrestled on the day.

7th-ranked Williams men's basketball picked up where it left off the night before, riding a 61% shooting effort from the field (60% from three) and 35% field-goal percentage defense to a 92-62 victory over Bates. The Ephs are now 14-1 on the year and 2-0 in the NESCAC.

After defeating the 11th-ranked Tufts Jumbos last night in a last-second thriller, Williams women’s basketball (13-4, 2-0 NESCAC) picked up another victory over Bates College (8-8, 0-2), 67-59. The win gives the Ephs a 2-0 start to conference play.

Women's Track and Field off to a Strong Start at Home

Ephs win conference opener over Tufts, 91-55
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- 7th-ranked Williams men’s basketball defeated Tufts, 91-55, in its NESCAC opener to push its winning streak to four games. Co-captain Blake Schultz led the way for the Ephs with 26 points on 11-16 shooting from the field; Harlan Dodson was the only other Eph in double figures, scoring 11 on 4-5 shooting, and co-captain Joe Geoghegan added 9 points and 7 rebounds on the game.

With the game knotted at fifty-seven points apiece, Williams junior Chessie Jackson and first-year Claire Baecher ran a perfect give and go play on the final offensive possession of the game to defeat the 11th-ranked Tufts Jumbos, 59-57.

UTICA, NY -- The Williams women's hockey team (4-5-1) played a gutsy sixty minutes in upstate New York this evening but could not find the equalizing score, as they fell to the Utica Pioneers (8-5-2) for the second time this season, this one by a count of 1-0. The Ephs played the Pioneers to a one-goal loss earlier in the season on Dec. 12th, but head coach Marissa O'Neil was convinced that the team played better in this contest.

Williams men’s basketball jumped four spots, from no. 11 to no. 7, in this week’s D3Hoops.com rankings, following its defeat of archrival Amherst on Saturday. Ephs outlast Wesleyan, 73-70
Williams women’s basketball (11-4) rebounded from a tough loss against archrival Amherst on Saturday to pick up a win against their other Little Three foe Wesleyan (6-6), 73-70, tonight at Chandler Gymnasium. The win did not come easy for the Ephs, as the Cardinals made a game of it in the second half after losing an early first half advantage and trailing at the break by seven.

Freshman Cody Skinner ended a thrilling contest by converting on a 2 on 1 a minute into overtime. The goal gave Williams a 3-2 win over visiting Hamilton, improving the Ephs’ record to 5-1 in league play. The win was huge for the team, rebounding after a tough loss last night to Amherst.

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA- The Eph grapplers traveled to the University of Northern Iowa to compete in the National Duels. The National Duels is a team tournament that pits the best teams in the country against each other. AMHERST, MA - The Williams College women's swimming and diving team (3-1) handed rival Amherst College their first loss of the season in an away matchup early this afternoon. The Ephs swept the Lord Jeffs with a final score of 207-91, taking victories in twelve out of sixteen events and setting four pool records.

After falling by three in the opening round of the Winter Williams Classic to Emerson, the Williams women’s basketball team (9-4) found themselves in an another last-minute battle in the consolation game of the tournament against Rhode Island College (8-3). This time around the Ephs ended up on the winning end, holding off the Anchorwomen in the final seconds after letting a seventeen point second-half lead slip away.
