Ephs top Directors' Cup competition at winter's end

CLEVELAND, OH -- The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced today that the Williams College Ephs have extended their lead the NCAA Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup competition to 233.25 points.  Amherst with 663.25 points has moved into second place, supplanting Calvin (MI), which was in second place after the fall season.

Williams led the competition after the fall season by 18 points over Calvin 367-349. Calvin is now in sixth place with a total of 490.00 points.

Cup competition based on an institution’s finish at NCAA team Championship events.

During the NCAA winter championships season the Ephs scored in eight sports. Men’s basketball accumulated 90 points with a second place finish and women’s swimming & diving added 85 points finishing third to lead the Williams winter charge.

Men’s swimming & diving (69 points) and women’s basketball (64 points) each finished 9th; skiing (54 points) and women’s track & field (63.75 points) were 12th; men’s track and field added 54 points by finishing 18th and wrestling was 23rd, which boosted the Eph total by another 50 points.

This year’s winter total of 529.75 points is a Williams and a Learfield Sports NCAA Division III record and gives the Ephs their best fall/winter total in the 15-year history competition – 896.75 points, 26.5 points above their previous best in 2002-03 (873.25). The previous Eph best winter championships total was 497.25 points, which was also recorded in 2002-03. The Eph and Learfield Sports NCAA Division III record point total is currently 1,158.25 points, which was achieved in 2002-03.

A year ago the Ephs tallied 620.50 points through the winter championships, leaving them in second place, 58.5 points behind archrival Amherst.

Last year the Ephs utilized a spring surge to win their 11th consecutive Directors’ Cup with a total of 1,066.00 points.

Both NESCAC and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) have three teams in the top ten. NESCAC has three in the top five with Williams (1), Amherst (2) and Middlebury (5), while the WIAC has Stevens Point (4), La Crosse (7), and Whitewater (10).
