Ephs move into 1st in Learfield Sports Directors' Cup from 5th after fall season
CLEVELAND, OH – With eight sports scoring in the 2011 NCAA winter championships Williams College has jumped from 5th place at the end of the fall to first place at the end of the winter season in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup competition.
Washington University (MO) led the competition at the end of the fall with 336 points, exactly 100 points ahead of the Ephs. The Bears of Washington University are now third with 649.5 points.
Williams finished first after the winter in 2010 as well and has been on top of the standings at the end of the winter 11 times in 16 years. At winter’s end a year ago the Ephs had 896.75 points, having scored 529.75 points that winter.
Williams has won 12 straight Learfield Sports Directors’ Cups and 14 out of 15.
This winter three Eph teams finished in the top five and four in
the top 10 as Williams amassed 483.5 points. Men’s basketball
and women’s swimming posted the highest finishes by claiming
thirds, men’s swimming finished tied for fourth and
women’s indoor track & field captured 7th
place.
The Eph ski team posted a 14th place finish at the NCAA
Division I Championships, while wrestling was 23rd,
men’s indoor track & field came in 29th, and
women’s basketball was 33rd.
Three of the top five teams after the winter championship season are members of NESCAC. Middlebury moved up from sixth to second place and now has a total 664 points, giving the Ephs a 55.5-point lead heading into the spring championship season. Archrival Amherst vaulted from 16th in the fall standings into fifth place and has 587 points.
