ALL-SPORTSMANSHIP SELECTIONS ANNOUNCED
Honor Recognizes Positive Contributions to Sport Within
Conference
Eight Ephs Honored
HADLEY, Mass. -- The
New England Small College Athletic Conference announced the 2008
Fall All-Sportsmanship Team for each fall sport sponsored by the
conference. The All-Sportsmanship Team is composed of one
student-athlete from each institution for each sport and is
selected by the players and coaches from their respective team for
their positive contributions to sportsmanship. The student-athlete
selected must be in good academic standing and a member of the team
at the conclusion of the season in order to be eligible for
selection.
The All-Sportsmanship Team recognizes student-athletes from each
varsity sport who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to
sportsmanship. These student-athletes exhibit respect for
themselves, teammates, coaches, opponents, and spectators. They
display sportsmanship not only as a participant in their sport but
also as a spectator and in their everyday lives. Through their
positive actions and example, these student-athletes inspire others
to adhere to the quality of sportsmanship that the NESCAC and the
NCAA endorse.
Of the 83 individuals selected for All-Sportsmanship honors, 11
received NESCAC All-Conference recognition in their respective
sport this fall. The Golf All-Sportsmanship Team had four of its 10
members earn All-NESCAC in 2008, including Player of the Year Reid
Longley (Atlanta, Ga.) from Trinity. Longley, the top finisher at
the 2008 NESCAC Golf Championship Qualifi er in September, helped
the Bantams to a second place showing by carding a two-day total of
141 (-1). The Ephs Sarah Burleigh earned All-NESCAC honors in field
hockey.
The Fall All-Sportsmanship Teams also include a total of two
current and former members of the NESCAC Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC): Gus Spaulding (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) a senior
member of the Bowdoin Football team, and Lauren Garcia (Cincinnati,
Ohio), a senior on the Williams Women’s Soccer squad. Garcia
also earned All-Sportsmanship honors in the fall of 2007.
The NESCAC SAAC serves as the liaison between the student-athletes
of NESCAC member institutions and conference administrators. The
committee provides a voice to represent the concerns of all
student-athletes and to discuss issues impacting student-athlete
welfare. The NESCAC SAAC represents all students who participate in
intercollegiate athletics and promotes and celebrates
student-athletes achievements.
The eight Eph student-athletes selected to the Fall 2008 NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team are all seniors. Lauren Garcia is the lone Eph to repeat from last year. This years list of Eph honorees includes:

Notable members among the 83 individuals selected to the Winter
All-Sportsmanship Team were women’s basketball player Val
Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) of Bates and Trinity men’s squash
player Gustav Detter (Malmoe, Sweden). The 2009 NESCAC
Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, Beckwith led her squad
in scoring for the third year in a row as she ranked second overall
in the league with 18.3 points per game - a single-season
career-high - while hitting an even 45.0-percent of her shots.
Detter, the 2009 NESCAC Men’s Squash Player of the Year, went
13-1 during the 2008-09 campaign and has a career record with the
Bantams of 65-11. Of the 22 men’s and women’s squash
players honored on the All-Sportsmanship team, 10 received
All-Conference recognition this season.
The Winter All-Sportsmanship Team was created by the NESCAC
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The NESCAC SAAC serves
